Fighting Irish fends off Hawks
A pair of Metro Detroit teams renewed their rabid rivalry from a year ago in a Wednesday stare down at the Brownstown Sports Arena.
Detroit Fighting Irish needed the shootout to upend the visiting Motor City Hawks 6-5 in U.S. Premier Hockey League, Midwest Division play.
The Fighting Irish had coughed up a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
Penalties were a factor with 19 minor infractions being called. Motor City went 3-6 on the power play as opposed to Detroit’s 1-6 showing with the extra man.
Veteran forward Christian Ramage had a goal and an assist and 1998 birth-year goalie Austin Stefan made 44 saves for the Fighting Irish.
Andrew Baxter scored a pair of goals for the Hawks.
The win gives Detroit a 1-2 record while Motor City now sits at 2-1-1.
