Kam River Fighting Walleye of the Superior International Jr. Hockey League has stayed true to local roots with the signing of 2005 birth year forward Sam Sargent.

Sargent earned his way on to the Kam River roster head of the 2023-2024 season with a strong showing at the recent tryout camp that the Fighting Walleye held.

“Sam came to camp and impressed the staff and scouts,” relayed Fighting Walleye general manager. Kevin McCallum. “Having him in the lineup for us will be exciting with his grit and nose for the net. We expect Sam to develop into a premiere junior hockey player and look forward to seeing his progression through the next couple of years.”

The 5-foot-11 165 pound pepperpot played for the Thunder Bay West End Bruins U18 AA team in 2022-2023 and rang up 49 goals, 41 assists, 90 points while piling up 133 penalty minutes in 56 games.

Fighting Walleye assistant general manager Bryan Smeltzer also commented on the signing of Sargent.

“Sam is an intelligent, hard working forward with goal scoring ability … and he plays with grit. His game is on a steep upward trajectory and we believe he will be an integral player for us,” Smeltzer noted.
