The second-and-third-place teams in the Midwest Jr. Hockey League — Motor City Monarchs and Detroit Fighting Irish — both skated to Tuesday night triumphs.

MOTOR CITY MONARCHS 4, MICHIGAN ICE DOGS 3

MWJHL scoring leader Adam Jonak tacked on two goals and added an assist, while Justin Session and Zach Kopinski netted solo markers for the visiting Monarchs.

High-scoring defender Jarrad Vroman chipped in with two assists and goalie Tyler Skulley made 21 saves for his 15th win of the season — which is just one less than league leader David Krejcik of the Traverse City Hounds.

DETROIT FIGHTING IRISH 4, DECATUR BLAZE 1

Eric Long scored twice for the winning home side as Detroit remained five points back of second-place Motor City with five games in hand.

Shawn Eastman and Ken Winter also scored for Detroit, which got 25 saves from George Hill.

In his second straight start and second straight win for the Fighting Irish since returning from a three-day audition with the Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League, Hill improved his record to 5-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against-average and .896 save percentage.

The Fighting Irish plays host to Decatur again tonight in an 8:30 start at the Ice Box Sports Centre.
