Firehawks vacate basement

Soo Firehawks have moved past the Alpena Flyers into sixth place in the seven-team Midwest Jr. Hockey League.

Playing at home on Saturday, the Firehawks got two goals from Cody Anderson en route to a 3-1 win over the third-place MC Monarchs. Anderson now has 16 goals in 20 games on the season.

Ryan Marshall also scored for the Soo in support of the 37-save effort of Mackenzie Bruce.

The win gives the Soo 14 points on the season, one more than Alpena, which lost 5-2 to the first-place Traverse City Hounds on Saturday.

The Firehawks will try to move further ahead of Alpena today when it again plays host to MC in a 1 p.m. match at Big Bear Arena.

In the only other game before the Christmas break, the second-place Detroit Fighting Irish will play host to the Michigan Ice Dogs today in a 1:10 p.m. start at the Ice Box Sports Center.

  1. I like the way Cody plays the game. He is a good honest player that has a nose for the net. He a nice kid from a nice famaly.
