Fighting Irish shuts down Firehawks

A pair of third-period goals from Jacob Hernandez lifted Detroit Fighting Irish to a 3-1 verdict over Soo Firehawks in Midwest Jr. Hockey League action from Sunday.

Hernandez, a 1995 birth-year forward, now has a team-leading 12 goals on the season for Detroit, which strengthened its hold on third place in the MWJHL standings while boosting its record to 9-6-1, good for 19 points.

Chuck Hicks netted the other goal for the winners and Fighting Irish goalie Austin Stefan kicked out 16 Soo shots to post the victory.

Cody Anderson scored the only goal for the Soo, which is in last place in the MWJHL with 7 points from a record of 3-8-1.

Anderson has a team-leading 9 goals on the season for the Firehawks.

The two teams meet again this Friday and Saturday when the Fighting Irish will play host to the Firehawks at the Ice Box Sports Center in Brownstown.

Game times are slated for 8:10 p.m. on Friday and 3:10 p.m. on Saturday.
