Hounds extend first-place lead
Traverse City Hounds have opened up a six-point lead on the second-place Detroit Fighting Irish atop the Midwest Jr. Hockey League standings.
TC boosted its record to an impressive 25-1-1 on Saturday with a 9-2 road decision over the Soo Firehawks at Big Bear Arena.
The Hounds also have three games in hand on the second-seeded Fighting Irish, which has 45 points from a record of 21-6-3.
In Saturday’s 9-2 win over the Firehawks, Jan Voves and Austin Flores scored two goals apiece to pace the Hounds. Kyle Winkelman, Greg Meuser, Travis Kirk and Blake Anderson all tallied a goal and an assist to aid the TC cause.
Dylan Wilkinson wired the other TC goal and Clayton Dowlan, Kevin Cole and Cam Fisher all posted two assists.
“It’s always great to get the sweep,” said Hounds goaltender Justin Abdelhak, who made 30 saves in the Saturday win. “Everything was clicking and when that happens, it makes it very easy to play goal. Just a great weekend.”
Every TC skater, save for defensemen Andrew Dzierwa and Kevin Hansen, recorded at least one point.
Cody Therrian and Michael Mullen scored for the Firehawks, who also lost to TC at home on Friday. The two losses drop the Soo’s record to 6-17-2.
