He has had offers to move up to the American Collegiate Hockey Association ranks for the 2014-2015 season.

But playmaking forward James Smith has informed Detroit Fighting Irish coach-general manager Dan Vasquez that he will be returning to the Midwest Jr. Hockey League team for his final season of eligibility in 2014-2015.

Calling it the “right thing to do”, Smith has committed to the Fighting Irish for the 2014-2015 campaign — which as he told Vasquez, will allow him to better prepare for life as a college student-athlete in 2015-2016.

A 1994 birth-year, Smith is coming off a point-per-game season with the Fighting Irish in 2013-2014.

The native Michigander had 15 goals, 22 assists, 37 points in 36 regular-season games with the Fighting Irish and followed that with 2 goals and an assist in 3 playoff outings.
