Pass the broom.

All three first-round playoff series in the Midwest Jr. Hockey League ended in two-game sweeps on Saturday.

MOTOR CITY, MICHIGAN

The Monarchs got a goal and four assists from regular-season scoring champ Adam Jonak and three goals from Tory Shand en route to their sweep of the visiting Ice Dogs.

Motor City finished second during the regular season while Michigan placed seventh.

DETROIT, ALPENA

Goalie Kory Dombrowski stopped 40 of 41 shots to backstop the Fighting Irish past the visiting Flyers in winning back-to-back outings.

Detroit finished fourth during the regular season while Alpena placed fifth.

SOO, DECATUR

The visiting Firehawks pulled the first-round upset by sweeping the heavily-favoured Blaze.

Matthew MacLaren had a three-goal series for the Soo, which had finished sixth during the regular season, well back of third-place Decatur.

TRAVERSE CITY

The Hounds had a first-round bye by virtue of finishing in first place during the regular season.

What you think about “Midwest playoff sweeps”

  1. Watching on line. The Irish goalie is working his normal stats against the Monarchs. Too bad the goalie with the better stats is on the bench, 86% save pct. does not match up to 90% save pct.
